The story of Blair Athol
Pitlochry has had a distillery since 1798, which makes this one of the oldest legal whisky sites in Scotland. The original distillery was called Aldour, after the burn that supplied it, and it took the name Blair Athol in 1825 from a village seven miles to the north.
Ownership then moved through a series of lessees, including Alexander Connacher & Co and later Elizabeth Connacher. In 1886 it was bought by Peter Mackenzie, who would also found Dufftown. The distillery fell silent between 1932 and 1949. During that gap, in 1933, Peter Mackenzie & Co was bought by the Perth blender Arthur Bell & Sons.
In the 1970s Bell's was growing into the UK's top selling blended Scotch, and Blair Athol was doubled in capacity from two stills to four in 1973. Guinness bought Bell's in 1985, and after further mergers the business became part of Diageo. A visitor centre opened in 1987.
Who owns Blair Athol now?
Diageo has owned Blair Athol since 1997, according to ScotchWhisky.com. Before that the distillery was part of Arthur Bell & Sons from 1933.
How Blair Athol is made
Mashing: lauter mash tun, 8.2 tonnes of grist
Wort: cloudy
Fermentation: a maximum of 50 hours
Stills: four, with plain shaped wash and spirit stills
Filling strength: 63.5% ABV; new make strength 67%
Maturation: most of the spirit is filled into ex-Bourbon casks for blending, with first fill sherry casks used for single malt releases
The Blair Athol range
Blair Athol has mostly been blended. In the 1980s Bell's bottled an eight year old single malt. Under Diageo ScotchWhisky.com says it has appeared as a 12 year old in the Flora and Fauna range, matured in first fill ex-Sherry casks. We could not load an official Diageo page for the current range or ABVs, so check the label before you buy.
