Ben Nevis history, people and production

Where is Ben Nevis distillery?

The distillery is at Lochy Bridge, Fort William, Inverness-shire, postcode PH33 6TJ, at the foot of Ben Nevis. Whiskypedia lists the region as Highland. The official site says its water starts as rain and snow melt on the mountain 1,345 metres above sea level and arrives via the Allt a'Mhuillin burn.

Ben Nevis history

'Long' John Macdonald took out a licence in 1825. When he died in 1856, his son Donald P. Macdonald took over. In 1847 Queen Victoria visited with the young Prince of Wales, and Long John presented a cask of his whisky to be opened when the prince turned 21, according to the official timeline.

Demand was so high that a second distillery, Nevis, was built nearby in 1878. At one point more than 200 people worked there. Nevis closed in 1908. The Macdonald family held Ben Nevis until the 1940s.

The Canadian entrepreneur Joseph Hobbs bought it, in 1941 according to Whiskypedia and 1944 according to the official site. He sold the Nevis site to the neighbouring Glenlochy distillery. In 1955 he installed a Coffey still, making Ben Nevis one of the first distilleries to produce malt and grain whisky side by side, and he blended them before maturing.

Production stopped in 1978. Long John International, the whisky arm of Whitbread, bought it in 1981 and restarted production in 1984 without the Coffey still. It closed again in 1986. The Japanese company Nikka bought it in 1989, installed a new mash tun, washbacks and boiler, and reopened in 1990. The visitor centre opened in 1991 and the distillery celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2025.

Who owns Ben Nevis?

Nikka Whisky Distilling Company has owned it since 1989. Whiskypedia lists Asahi Group Holdings as the parent company. Earlier owners were Whitbread (1981 to 1989), Joseph Hobbs, D.P. Macdonald & Sons and John Macdonald.

How Ben Nevis is made

  • Stills: 4, two wash and two spirit, with plain, deep-based spirit stills

  • Malt: Speyside type, lightly peated at times (30 to 35ppm)

  • Mash tun: stainless steel, lauter

  • Washbacks: 8, six steel and two pine

  • Fermentation: 48 hours, longer at weekends

  • Yeast: brewer's yeast, which Whiskypedia says Ben Nevis is the last Scottish distillery to insist on

  • Water: Allt a'Mhuillin burn

  • Capacity: 1.5 million litres of pure alcohol a year

The official site gives the spirit strength as roughly 23% for low wines and wash at 7 to 8% before distillation.

The Ben Nevis range

Official range pages were not loaded. Whiskypedia describes the following:

  • A 40 Year Old from one of the last 'blended at birth' casks, released in 2002

Much of the output goes as bulk supply to Japan, according to Whiskypedia.
