Auchroisk history, people and production

Dorie's Well

The distillery exists because Dorie's Well was discovered, with water similar to that used at the Glen Spey distillery, which supplied malt for J&B. A test batch made with the well water at Glen Spey was approved, and construction began at the well in 1972.

Timeline

  • 1972: construction begins

  • 1974: production starts

  • 1978: first single malt

  • 1986: single malt rebranded as The Singleton, because Auchroisk was seen as too hard for consumers outside Scotland

  • 2001: bottled as Auchroisk 10 Year Old in the Flora and Fauna range

  • 2008: renamed The Singleton of Auchroisk

A vatting hub

The distillery is used as a hub for vatting Auchroisk with the highland whiskies used in J&B, before shipping for marrying and bottling.

The name

Auchroisk means shallow ford across the red stream in Gaelic, referring to the nearby Mulben Burn.

Added detail from trade sources

  • Ownership confirmed: Diageo has owned Auchroisk since 1997, following the Grand Metropolitan and Guinness merger, per Whiskypedia.

  • Build: IDV commissioned the distillery in 1972 for the J&B blend. Production officially began in 1974. Whiskypedia describes a white, harled modernist building on moorland.

  • Single malt history: first bottled as a single malt in 1986, it was the first malt to carry the Singleton name, which is now used for Glen Ord, Glendullan and Dufftown. Whiskypedia says the brand was dropped in 2001, followed by a Flora and Fauna bottling that year and a Rare Malts release in 2003.

  • Production: eight stills, eight steel washbacks, non peated malt, a 75 to 80 hour fermentation and water from Dories well (Whiskypedia spelling).

  • Role today: Whiskypedia says land around the distillery makes it one of Diageo's main northern warehousing sites.

  • Visitors: not open to the public. Address: Mulben, Moray, AB55 6XS.

  • Not verified: current ABVs and any official range, as malts.com and thesingleton.com did not load.
