History
The Sonnenschein family business traces its name to a distilling tradition founded in 1875 and later moved to Witten-Heven.
The historic Witten operation produced grain and fruit spirits and also distilled German single malt whisky.
A documented Sonnenscheiner single malt was distilled in 1989 and matured for around 15 years, including a sherry-cask finish. The original distilling operation later ceased, while the Sonnenschein name continued in retail and hospitality.
Production
Historic German single malt production took place in Witten.
The business also made grain spirits, fruit spirits and liqueurs.
The old distilling operation should not be presented as a current working whisky distillery.
Whisky range and legacy
Bottle / range | Status | Style | Notes |

Sonnenscheiner 15 Year Old | Historic | 1989 single malt | German single malt with sherry finish |
Other Sonnenschein whisky | Historic/retail context | Varied | Separate own-distilled whisky from later retail offerings |
Rare and limited releases
Historic bottlings require exact provenance checks. A reused brand name or a modern producer on the same site does not prove continuity with the original distillery.
