Humbel Spezialitaetenbrennerei: Stetten, Aargau
Updated: Oct 23
Humbel Spezialitaetenbrennerei is a family distillery in Stetten, in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is best known for fruit spirits, especially cherry brandy, and for organic spirits. The source we read does not mention whisky, so this profile covers the distillery as a whole.
History and family
The Umwelt Zeitung (6 October 2025) reports that Max Humbel laid the foundation of the business in 1918. Lorenz Humbel runs it as the third generation. His children Gloria and Luis joined in 2016. Luis trained as a distiller in Germany and works as the master distiller, and Gloria looks after sales. The article says the fourth generation will take over soon.
What it makes
The article describes the range as classic Swiss distillates, single variety fruit brandies, speciality and organic spirits, home produced organic fair trade rum and imported organic spirits, liqueurs and bitters. Cherries from north west Switzerland make up the largest share, alongside plums, apples, pears, quince, grapes and elderberries.
Humbel says all its fruit comes from Swiss farmers. The distillery began distilling organic cherries in 1995 and describes itself as a pioneer of organic distillates.
Scale
According to the article, the distillery processes between 250 and 450 tonnes of fruit a year and distils between 10,000 and 30,000 litres of pure alcohol. Contract distilling for customers is a smaller sideline of 400 to 700 litres a year. About 20 people work there in the busy summer and pre-Christmas seasons.
