History
The Macpherson-Grant family began looking for a use for old farm buildings on the castle grounds in late summer 2011. They decided to build a distillery and to keep the old buildings preserved as far as possible.
Production began in September 2014. The inaugural bottling was expected in 2022.
Single estate
The barley is grown on the estate and the spirit is matured there. That is why the Macpherson-Grants describe Ballindalloch as Scotland's first single estate distillery.
The family and the Cragganmore link
Ballindalloch Castle was built in 1546 and has been home to the Macpherson-Grant family ever since. In 1869 Sir George Macpherson-Grant leased part of the estate to distiller John Smith to build Cragganmore. The family stayed involved for most of the 20th century and sold its stake to the Distillers Company Limited in 1965. Whiskypedia counts Ballindalloch as the family's return to distilling after almost 50 years.
Building the distillery
Guy Macpherson-Grant, the 23rd generation to live at the castle, began converting a 19th century farm steading in 2011. Whiskypedia says production began in late 2014, and The Single Cask says the first spirit ran in September 2014. The distillery and visitor centre were officially opened in 2015 by the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, now King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The family committed to waiting at least eight years before bottling.
How it is made
Stills: one wash still (lamp glass shape) and one spirit still (ball shape), both with worm tub condensers
Mash tun: semi lauter, with a grist of about 1.1 tonnes
Washbacks: four wooden washbacks of 10,000 litres each, fermenting for a minimum of 60 hours
Spirit: filling strength 64% and new make strength 71.5%, steam heated
Barley: grown in the estate's own fields, with the draff fed to the estate's Aberdeen Angus cattle
Water: Garline Springs on the estate (The Single Cask)
Capacity: around 100,000 litres of pure alcohol a year (The Single Cask)
Casks: first fill and refill barrels and hogsheads, plus first fill sherry butts
What has been released
The Single Cask reports that the whisky has come out as dated Vintage Releases rather than an age statement range, including a limited bottling for King Charles's 75th birthday. It also says independent bottlings are essentially nonexistent, because the family keeps almost all its stock. Specific bottlings and ABVs were not confirmed on the official site in this pass.

Whiskypedia gives the address as Ballindalloch Distillery, Ballindalloch, Moray AB37 9AA, phone +44 1807 500331, and says to contact the distillery for opening hours. Check the official site before travelling.

Gaps and conflicts: Whiskypedia says production began in late 2014 and The Single Cask says September 2014, so the post keeps the earlier wording. The draft's 2022 inaugural bottling line is from older reporting and was not matched to a dated release. Release names, ABVs, prices and visitor hours are not verified. Owner per Whiskypedia is Ballindalloch Distillery LLP, a company set up for the family's distillery. Set the slug by hand.
