Belfast: History, Whisky and Visitor Guide

The directory name Belfast describes the city's distilling heritage rather than one unique registered producer. To ground this guide in an actual operating site, it centres on the McConnell's Distillery and Visitor Experience in the former Crumlin Road Gaol.

Belfast at a glance

History and current status

McConnell's distillery opened in April 2024 and produces new make spirit in copper pot stills in a converted Victorian prison wing. The McConnell whisky brand traces its history to the 1770s, but bottled releases from sourced mature stocks cannot automatically be described as spirit distilled in the 2024 facility.

Whisky distillation, provenance and maturation

McConnell's 5 Year Old, Cognac Cask Finish and related whiskies are labelled branded releases. Mature whisky from the new Belfast stills requires sufficient time in oak and should be clearly identified by future release details.

Whisky bottles and ranges

Bottles are named only where independently identifiable. Whisky offered by a business may be sourced or blended elsewhere, and the region on a label does not necessarily show where distillation occurred.

McConnell's 5 Year Old Irish Whisky

This named release is associated with the company; confirm its edition, cask, strength and production source from the bottle label.

Pictured: McConnell's 5 Year Old Irish Whisky. This is a genuine labelled whisky bottle. For sourced or blended malt, it was not necessarily distilled at the visitor site.

Awards and milestones

Only verified, named whisky bottlings should be credited with tasting awards. Site openings, redevelopment and changes of ownership are historical milestones, not medals.
